Psychologist Corner with Joanna Konstantopoulou

If you’re interested in health and psychology, you’re in for a treat! We are so excited to welcome resident expert, and Healthy Psychology Joanna Konstantopoulou to our team. Each month, she will discuss a new topic that affects our society and us individuals. Here’s a little bit about Joanna and her story.

I am an experienced Health Psychologist with over 10 years of professional clinical experience. Here, I tell you a little about myself and my private practice. My particular area of expertise is behavioural and emotional change, and I take pride in building a good rapport with my patients, helping them to improve their overall wellbeing.

I specialise in health behaviour change, and the management of weight, stress, and chronic illness. I believe in empowering my clients to make health behaviour changes that will tangibly improve their quality of life: to do this, I need to be attuned to each client’s particular experience, so I tailor each treatment according to the individual’s needs.

This means that I use a variety of therapeutic tools and behavioural techniques according to the needs of each client, which can range from cognitive restructuring to exposure therapy, or motivation interviewing to mindfulness. I’m committed to providing the best therapeutic outcome possible to help my patients achieve balance, and I collaborate with psychiatrists, nutritionists, and doctors in order to ensure my clients have the benefit of a holistic approach when its needed.

How I started my career as a Health Psychologist

My initial BSc was in Psychology, and I then obtained two Master degrees – one in Health Psychology and one in Child Development. I then completed a four-year qualification in Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Following that, I registered as a Health Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council – this means that I have met their high standards for training and professional skills. After having trained as a Health Psychologist, I was committed to creating a clinic where my clients were treated both effectively and efficiently with a psychological practice that is informed by the best scientific evidence available. This dream has been realised in the Health Psychology Clinic in Harley Street, where I’m now based.

How a typical day looks like

I tend to start my day at 8 am with a healthy breakfast and coffee at home. As I am self-employed, I’m in charge of my schedule, so if I don’t have a morning clinic booked, I’ll take time out for my own wellbeing and enjoy a workout – typically pilates or barre at home. It really helps me focus and gives me an energy boost.

I’ll then be in my clinic at 9.30 am, where I’ll see my first patients and in the afternoon I will continue to have one-to-one sessions with patients.

Following that, I’ll head out for a walk and I will enjoy cooking at home preparing dinner. I always try to practice my relaxation techniques or stretch in the evenings too, to take time for my own wellbeing.
