Patrick teaches vigorous and fluid vinyasa yoga that builds strength, creates flexibility and inspires play. His teaching goes beyond intelligent alignment; moving any willing student to an introspective, holistic experience that opens the chakras and cultivates awareness. He was listed by Sonima as one of the 100 Most Influential Yoga Teachers in America.
Patrick travels the world leading workshops, retreats and training modules. His media presence has allowed him to share yoga on a global scale, through his followers on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, his engaging work with CodyApp and his features in Cosmopolitan UK, People Magazine, Yoga Digest, Draze, Mantra, and Origin Magazine.
Patrick is also the creator of men’s wear line BLNCX which brings high performance, stylish and comfortable athletic wear to the market. We caught up with Patrick to get the low down on how he shares yoga on a global scale!
What motivated and inspired you to first get into yoga?
I really wanted to try something new; when I began yoga my body was so stiff I couldn’t even sit on the floor. My mom who had been practicing for a while showed me a few hip opening stretches and I would just sit in those every day. That was my yoga practice in the beginning. It was very simple and felt grounding which helped me learn to connect with myself.
What is your philosophy towards yoga and how do you incorporate it into everyday life?
I try to focus on three things: gaining insight over anxiety, making the hard work fun, and practicing with a pure motive. The pure motive is something I repeat to myself everyday before I get on my mat: practice out of love for yourself with a desire to know the truth of your own being and with a longing to benefit all beings in all times and spaces. That helps me focus and realise we are all energy coming together and flowing apart constantly. It helps me keep an open mind and live with kindness.
You travel the world teaching yoga (the dream!). How did you make this a reality?
Haha I get this question asked a lot, but honestly it just happened. I started teaching privately, then public classes that became popular, and eventually people started asking me to come teach at their studios. Those first workshops went well and word of mouth started to spread. In the beginning it was on a much smaller scale, now it is somewhere new every weekend. It is fun to have the opportunity to explore the world and share yoga, I appreciate it everyday.
You have a large presence on social media; how has this enabled you to share yoga on a global scale?
Plain and simple it just allows you to reach people, to connect, to be part of the same experience. In general, social media has really helped pull a few of the curtains away from yoga. Maybe five years ago people had no idea what they were getting into when they went to a yoga class, but now you can start to see all the different ways to practice and I think it is beautiful. I’m happy to be part of it, to share the journey with so many people, to see yoga grow in so many directions. Personally, I enjoy staying in touch with people that come to my workshops, retreats and training, it is cool to see what they are up to in their practice and in life.
What role has Youtube played in your success?
Carling [my partner] and I always just have fun with our YouTube channel and use it to give back to people who support us. I have sold a lot of online yoga classes, so I like to give classes away for free. Carling and I like to make little video blogs of our adventures around the world, they are like our keepsakes from the trips we take. Sharing those with people is fun because they get a behind the scenes look at what we are up to. Then of course we are a bit nerdy about food sometimes and try to share delicious recipes when we have a proper kitchen. We like to keep our creative energies flowing.
How do you meaningfully engage with your audience?
Taking time to answer emails and questions. I get a lot of them everyday so sometimes I am slow, also when I have good wifi I chat with people on periscope or answer questions on specific Instagram posts. There is work to it for sure, but I started this journey as a teacher to help people so it’s fun.
Where in the world is your favourite place to practice yoga?
With friends, wherever that may be. My favourite place to practice is around positive vibes; I have many friends who are great teachers and many teachers who are great teachers, it is fun to take their classes of course, but I find the deepest connection to myself when everyone is on their own vibe mentally supporting everyone else in the room. That sounds a little hippie I’m sure, but it’s true.
What advice would you give to someone just beginning their yoga practice?
Take it slow and be consistent. Set a routine and stick to it, whether it is doing a 20 minute video from youtube three times a week, going to a class at a studio or a gym five days a week, sitting by yourself for 10 minutes a day when you wake up… Pick one thing that you can commit to and let the results happen. Try not to be overwhelmed by the process, just let it happen and go with it.
Do you have a favourite quote or mantra that you live by?
Right now the pure motive is really important to me. I spoke a bit about that earlier but it puts me into the right place. I am always in search of truth and working to know the difference between truth, comfort, and happiness. It is easy to get these things confused because we naturally don’t want truth to be hard because it can often be painful, but if I always take steps in search of the truth it leads me forward.
Finally, what does the rest of 2016 have in store for you?
Too many things, but I love being busy so I’m good with it! I am teaching somewhere different every week this year, in the last 9 months I have went around the world twice so that adventure will continue. I am working a bit with H&M, putting the finishing touches on a book and my next clothing line for BLNCX is coming out soon.
