Giving Voice to Female Entrepreneurs with Rebecca Clark

Rebecca Clark is a copywriter based in London under the brand name Powered Up Content. She specialises in writing content marketing for female entrepreneurs in a way that sounds like them, resonates with their audience and is optimised for conversions.

Graduating during a pandemic threw all her plans into chaos so instead of waiting for someone to give her a job, she created her own.

Freelancing gave her the freedom to direct her own future and work with clients who truly inspire her.

What’s your mission?

There have been many times throughout my life that my voice was silenced. I know many other women feel the same. But I’m here to tell women to speak up because their message deserves to be heard. Through my copywriting, I aluminate the voices of female entrepreneurs in a way that resonates with their audience.
I take my time digging into my client’s story, values and vision and then connect that to their ideal client’s journey and create strategic content across all platforms. My insight comes from my love for storytelling which led me to study Creative Writing at university.

What inspired you to start your brand?

Becoming a professional writer was a dream of mine from a young age. As I grew up, I became more aware of the importance of female empowerment. I decided to hone my skills by studying Creative Writing at university. However, I ended up graduating in 2020 so I graduated into chaos. Unable to just sit at home and wait it out, I gave freelancing ago and fell in love. I realised I could use my skills to help awesome female entrepreneurs thrive and become determined to make that my job.

What’s your competitive advantage?

On calls, I’ve found that a lot of people connect with my energy. They sense my passion for what I do and also how I think deeper about my writing. This translates into the content I create for clients as it authentically reflects them and resonates with their audience beyond a surface level.
I don’t get blindsided by numbers. I focus on building genuine relationships which automatically turns into interactions, conversions and so on. That’s why I take time to go deep into the client’s brands. Their content should sound like their voice when it’s written by me.

What skills did you bring in your journey?

Writing was the main skill I brought to my brand, to begin with. Throughout my time at university, I wrote in different forms, tones, styles and for different audiences. This adaptability helped me to write for various clients in a way that sounded like them. I think a lot of business owners are concerned about losing authenticity when they hire a copywriter but I was able to use my adaptability to grow my business.

I would also say dedication and determination are skills I brought to my business. A lot of people have doubted the value of my Creative Writing degree and wondered how I was going to be able to make a career as a writer.

To be honest, I wasn’t always sure either but I knew I was going to make it happen and I have.

What skills did you improve by starting your brand?

I learnt a lot of skills during my business journey. I think the biggest area of growth for me was confidence. I have never been a confident person but I enjoyed freelancing so much I had to find a way to feel good enough about myself to sell what I did to others. It’s definitely been hard at times. It’s a skill I’m improving upon every day.

For me, selling comes down to truly see the value of what I do so I can portray that to my leads. If I don’t believe what I do is worth a good amount of money, how can I expect anyone else to?

My favourite thing about Creative Impact is knowing I have people backing me up.

Being a business owner can be quite lonely at times. I do have friends and family for support but they aren’t in the online business world so it can be hard to get feedback from them. Having other online business owners and female entrepreneurs I can turn to is so useful. I’m always second-guessing myself so I need the backup!

What’s the most rewarding part of running your own brand?

The most rewarding part is seeing what I do make a difference. For a long time, I felt quite small and like nothing I did mattered. So being able to work with female entrepreneurs who inspire me and help them along their business journey in any way I can is so exciting to me. We can all do amazing things if we just give ourselves the opportunity!

ou only have 5 minutes to yourself. What do you do?

I get off my desk chair, lay on my bed and switch off by watching a quick YouTube video. Being able to focus on something else and not just my work is so important to me. I need distractions because I have a very busy mind! What I watch is quite varied from makeup videos to true crime to drag queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race.

What is one challenge you are glad you experienced?

When I first started freelancing, I connected with an amazing client. He gave me loads of work and was super happy with the content I was producing. However, I made the mistake of relying on him too much and didn’t work on really getting myself out there much. So when we inevitably stopped working together, I felt stuck.

I had been able to save up and then I could invest in the support I needed to develop my brand and market myself in a sustainable way. It taught me a lot about balancing current clients with marketing and what a good client was like so I could more easily avoid the people who were going to give me a hard time.

My piece of advice would be there is never a right time so just go for it.

If I had waited until I had my whole business plan figured out, I would have never started because a lot of my ideas about what I want my business to be comes from actually working with clients. Build experiences and experiment a bit then you can decide on the direction you want to go in.
