Empowering women with fitness and confidence: behind the content with Kate Rowe-Ham

Kate Rowe-Ham is a qualified personal trainer specialising in exercise for women of all ages and abilities. Kate has three children of her own and is passionate about helping women achieve mental and physical wellbeing through exercise. Kate’s goal is to show women that even when exercise is the last thing on your mind, it can be the key to getting through a bad day and can give you that little boost to feel you’ve got this. She teaches PT and spin from her home studio daily and she now hosts HIIT workouts at 6:35am on her Instagram channel KateRH Fitness for women to train with her from their own homes. When not empowering other women to achieve their own fitness goals and body confidence, Kate loves running, swimming and raising money for different charities.

If you could share with us who you are and what’s your mission, what would you say?

I am Kate Rowe-Ham, 43. I am a Personal Training mother to 3 children who specialises in empowering busy mums and women alike. After struggling with eating disorders and body confidence issues before and after children I recognised a gap in the market for personal training that spoke to women like me. My mission is to engage, inspire, support and help others who might find themselves where I did, through my wesbite and social media.

Would you consider yourself more of a blogger or an Instagrammer?

I would say an Instagrammer. I would love to do blogging in the future.

How do you choose the content that goes into your accounts?

It all comes from my heart and what content I put out is often reflective of that. I also try to tie it on with articles relating to the wellness industry (check out these) that might be thought-provoking at the time.

What is the process behind each post you produce?

I take a lot of time thinking carefully about how I put across my opinion or viewpoint because I must take into account that my life experiences are just that and what might have worked for me may not work for others.

What has been a career highlight so far?

I had the pleasure of training Dame Kelly Holmes in one of my fitness classes and more recently I ran a half marathon in Kenya raising money for Tusk.org.

Can you share a story about the biggest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

I think my biggest mistake was posting too many negative stories and too often. I found myself trying to fit in with what I thought would get me followers. I wasn’t true to myself and felt my content lacked depth. I now focus on putting honest consistent relevant content on my site.

When it comes to health and wellness, how is the content you are creating helping to make a bigger impact in the world?

I hope that what people gain from it is a sense that they aren’t alone. That my content helps people understand the barriers to fitness and how to overcome them and in turn, this will impact their world and that my message will encourage more and more women to realise their full potentials

What is the biggest misconception about social media? What was the practise that has helped you with your strategy?

My strategy is to just be honest because in reality, that’s all I have plus the knowledge in my field. I also think being supportive of others is incredibly important.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

Throughout my 20’s I was a gym bunny and undertook my first and last Marathon aged 25 in 2001. 5 years later in 2006 I gained 3 stone with my first pregnancy and it took a very long time to regain any confidence I had, and just as I got “me” back, I fell pregnant again. However, due to awful morning sickness, I gained very little weight. We then moved to Geneva for 5 years where I found a passion for triathlons and my running took a new turn and I did lots of 5 and 10k races which I loved.

We then decided in 2013 to extend our family but it wasn’t that simple. I suffered 4 miscarriages, gained quite a bit of weight and felt like my body was my enemy because of what it was put through. Just as I’d accepted almost aged 40 that my gorgeous family would be the 4 of us, I found out I was pregnant again. The complete fear of another miscarriage meant I did no exercise and so the weight just piled on.

Our gorgeous little man arrived, and I turned 40. I was complete but I had lost all my body confidence again. To add to that I remember hearing from so many people was that as soon as you hit 40 it’s impossible to lose weight.  With my past and the desperate need to restore myself, I wanted to prove them wrong, the right way this time. I started to exercise at home following The Body Coach. To whom I credit my whole new career.

I didn’t want to go to a gym with all the extra weight that I felt I was carrying. As the weight feel of my confidence grew and I had my Eureka moment. I had wanted to work but I also want to be a mum and then it came to me.

Personal Training which would then enable me to do that but more importantly help others. Without Joe Wicks aka The Body Coach, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

What do you think is the most important thing about working on collaborations with other influencers and brands?

Supporting something or someone you truly believe in (learn how to pitch yourself to brands you belive in).

Who is your ideal collaboration with?

I am yet to have one but my ideal collaboration would be with Women’s Health Magazine

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start in the industry now?

Be honest, be true and be knowledgeable and don’t run before you can walk, and always stop and think.
